Mass production of PCB Shielding

PCB Shielding manufacturing is a process which starts during the PCB design stage, or while testing product's application, after reaching the conclusion that a PCB Shield is needed due to EMI issues that are preventing the product to work properly.

At the stage of PCB design, if an EMI issue is predicted, the most cost effective way of using PCB Shielding would be by selecting a standard PCB Shield and design the PCB accordingly, since a PCB Shielding fabricator promoting standard shielding usually produces
the shields with a dedicated progressive tool, already made. That fact will usually reduce the costs of samples, and prevent the need of investing in an expensive tool for further production series.

If the EMI issue is detected only after the design and during application's tests, a custom PCB Shield is required, and the process would be different: first, the RF or testing Engineer will send the PCB layout to the PCB shielding fabricator, stating the desired outline of the PCB shield, and the highest component height. The fabricator will then send a production drawing of the PCB Shielding based on client's requirements, and a set of samples will be ordered.

After evaluating these samples, and testing product's application after achieving required attenuation using the PCB shield, the customer will now have two options of series production: series production using CNC machines and bending machines, or investing in
high volume runs progressive hard tooling.

Series production of PCB shielding with CNC machines

Masach Technologies has developed a unique CNC punching line, suitable for working with thin gauge materials. Since the raw material used for production of PCB shielding is mainly thin gauged, this technique becomes a cost effective solution for medium series of PCB shielding. After cutting the shield's blank with the CNC punching machines, it will go to cleaning and bending stages.

Using CNC punching lines to blank PCB shields, eliminates the need of any NRE expense, and allows the client to order medium series of a custom PCB shield with reasonable unit prices.

Mass production of PCB shielding with progressive tooling

After reaching a certain quantity of PCB shielding production, investing in a progressive hard tool for mass quantities production is advised. Fabrication PCB shields with progressive tools, removes from the cost calculations the labor expenses, leaving to the equation the material cost and the punching/hit cost. A quantity justifying the investment in hard tooling for PCB shielding production, usually fits into the ten's of thousands and more, yet in particular cases, in order to achieve maximum planarity and reputability, some clients would choose to invest in tools prior of reaching these amounts of production.
